1981 Dencho Marine CF 37

  • Description

Seller's Description

This 1981 Choate FeoCF37 is a solidly built cruiser-racer. The CF 37s have a history of success on the racecourse, and a reputation for being a very spacious and comfortable boat for cruising and entertaining.

Incredibly spacious interior (12-foot beam!) The interior is the best layout I have found in a boat of this size and really is a pleasure to move through and entertain in.

A large v-berth (sail storage underneath) in the forward cabin with drawers and a hanging locker as well as private access to the head. Second hanging locker across from head. The settee is a booth to port and seats 4 easily. Ample storage in and around. Sofa to starboard. To starboard the galley includes double sink, force 10 gimbaled stove, refrigerator, and LOTS of storage. Across to port is a full size nav table.

This boat can sleep 8 people! Big V berth, a large aft quarter berth to port, the port settee converts into a double berth and to starboard the sofa and above it a berth for port tacks.

This boat just looks fast, and she is! At a fraction of the cost of a Catalina 38 and a very similar layout, this boat is way better built, and faster than the mass produced Catalinas. Look up Dennis Choate. He knew what he was doing when it came to building boats, and is still making amazing custom boats!

Recent maintenance: 300 hour Pathfinder Diesel installed 2016 New refrigerator pump and plate 2016 Lots of coats of bottom paint 2016 (still in great shape!)

Maintenance since I have owned the boat: All new waste plumbing, toilet, macerator 2017 Rig inspection 2017 Spreaders removed and new tips welded 2017 Rig tune 2017 New raw water filter and hoses 2017 New heat exchanger/boots 2017 New 19 gal fuel tank 2018 All new fuel lines, new racor, secondary fuel filter 2018 All cockpit winches serviced 2018 All new house and start batteries 2018 New winde

Equipment: Pathfinder diesel Harken roller furling Auto helm autopilot 19 gal diesel tank 15 gal holding tank 2 @ 30 gal fresh water tanks Spinnaker pole 2 spinnakers 3 mylar racing headsails Furling 120 Mainsail is old but useable

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The hull of the MARINER is the same as that of the RHODES 19. A fixed keel version was also available for both boats. In 1969, a ‘2+2’ version was introduced that has a slightly larger cuddy/cabin. A modified version (with different cabin design) called the SPRINDRIFT ONE appeared in 1980 after the original molds were sold to Rebel Industries-(Spindrift One-Designs).(76 built). Since 1986, the licensed builder has been Stuart Marine Corp. of Rockland, ME (USA).(Also builder of the RHODES 19).

Is anyone familiar with CF sailboats? Mfg.(Canadian?),build quality, etc. The ones I''ve seen on the net are older boats, but I''ve not been able to find any information on them. The 37 footer I was looking at was designed by Dennis Choate. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Never heard of CF. Could you be thinking of CS which was Canadian built?

Sailmc, I had never heard of the CF boats either. My thinking was along the same line as yours. After digging around the net a little more, I think the boat might have been built by a yard called "Dencho Marine" in S.Cal., but I don''t know this for sure. There are two of the "CF" 37 footers listed on "Yachtworld." They appear to be "old school" race boats. The ad on "Yachtworld" lists the hull material as fiberglass, but with a displacement of ~12K, I suspect that possibly the deck and hull are some type of composite material. That''s one aspect of knowing more about the boat that I''m particularly interested in.At this point, I seem to be "Lost in Translation." Where''s Jeff_H when you need him? 8^)

CF stands for Choate-Feo, I believe. Dennis Choate (Dencho) built many of these boats in Long Beach, CA. A CF 27 was famous a few years ago when campaigned by Dennis C. CF 37s are good boats similar in size and shape to Catalina 38s. I''m sure there are much more knowledgeable folks than me out there who could give you info.

jgeissinger, Thanks for the info.I have a couple of design databases on my home PC.I''ll try entering the Choate-Feo as manufacturer, and see if they bring up anything.I did find the boat listed on "Carl''s Sailing Calculator," as a CF 37 and the specs.for the boat were almost identical to a Farr 11.6 (38 footer)with the exception of the CF 37 being about ~2500lb.heavier.

I''m looking at a CF37 also. I was told only 10 were built. There are a couple still sailing in Southern California. I really like the style, having owned a Santana 30 that is very similar. Let me know if you find out anything. Troy

I am the owner of an awesome CF 37 designed and built by Dennis Choate. The boat is located in Santa Barbara and is now for sale. Let me know if you are interested.

Sorry to wake the dead on such and old post but I am looking at a CF37 in Michigan and I am curious if anybody has information about these boats.

cf 37 sailboat

yep a old string but I chip in anyway, ..... I have a CF37 Dennis Choate or Choate Feo 37 ... a awesome boat ! made a 3.25 hr trip last month, from two harbors to Long beach Very comfortably.

cf 37 sailboat

I recently purchased a choate 37.5. was wondering if it's a cored hull or not as well as the deck. I bought it to live in and it is very livable now just needing to get some things done to it. Brought it down from Bremerton WA to Portland, or.

I just bought a choate 375 yesterday in Ventura Ca. I was only aware of one other, it’s not in the water. What year is yours and what’s her name?

Let's Get to Know Each Other

Let's connect, why it's important to partner with a designer on your cf 37 sail.

Taking measurements is easy. All sailors work alongside our measurement team to measure and confirm their rig specs. This helps ensure your design is flawless and allows us to extend our Perfect Fit Guarantee to all of our sailors.

“ I just received my asymmetrical spinnaker, with sock and turtle bag, along with a new 135 Genoa. The entire process was simple and both sales and the design team were in regular contact if there were any questions. The customer portal was easy to use and lets you keep track of where in the process your sails are. Great sails, great service -Graham Edwards (Facebook)
“ The whole team at Precision Sails was fantastic from start to finish. We’ve had a laminate main and genoa made so far and have a spinnaker on the way. They listened carefully to our needs and recommended a great sail cloth. We couldn’t have gotten more bang for our buck! -Noah Regelous (Google)
“ We received our spinnaker and launched it yesterday and I just wanted to let you know how pleased we are with it. The service we received from your company was exceptional and the quality of your product is second to none. We will certainly be return customers in the next few months to replace our main and jib sails and will recommend your company to all our sailing buddies. Once again-thank you.” -Daniel Jackson (Google)
“ we had good communication during the planning stages and the knowledgeable people at precision sails really got me fixed up good! The sails look and work fabulous! my boat sails better than it ever had! couldn’t be more pleased with the product AND the service!” -Fred Jelich (Facebook)
“ Our new furling jib for a Corsair 27 Had to be specially designed due to the height of the furler, but this was accomplished quickly and in short order we had our sail which fits beautifully and has a great shape. It’s everything we could have wanted, high tech design, thoughtfully executed and affordable.” -Nancy Y. (Yelp)

indicates that the C&C 37 has an excellent combination of speed, manueverability, stability, and comfort. The broad beam makes it a bit more challenging in heavy seas than a narrower beam, but the deep draft compensates somewhat. It seems like a sensible compromise for what will hopefully be my home for the next 20-30 years. Ideally my inability to find consistent problem areas means it's also well-constructed.

if the seller accepts my offer. This will hopefully be my home for many years so I want to make certain its as safe and sound as possible. And I will check to make sure the gray water doesn't drain into the during the survey. That doesn't seem like a very sanitary system. I plan to spend next summer getting familiar with the boat on and modifying, repairing, and upgrading it to meet my needs before heading out to the Atlantic.

because they were sun crazed or leaking. It has balsa above the waterline and I found some cracks in the gel coat around a hand rail that was caused by water in the balsa that froze. I then removed almost everything and routed out the holes and filled them with and then re-drilled them. A lot of but not much cost. A draft over 5' will be limiting on the Intra Coastal and cruising in the . A deeper draft will sail better and with a C&C you will not be last in the harbor. Go for it.
